The Rock & Roll Literacy® Show
The Rock & Roll Literacy® presentation was created for kids (and adults) of all ages. Sigmund Brouwer brings his unique sense of play to the serious business of learning to read and write. Armed with music, humor and heart, he connects the dots for people who work with kids to cultivate reading and writing skills.
With four million books in print in seven languages, Sigmund is the author of Rock & Roll Literacy, a non-fiction book on how to use the power of story to teach reading and writing. He has written 27 novels and numerous series of children’s books, including 25 titles with Orca Book Publishers. Sigmund Brouwer's complete list of books consists of more than 100 titles for children and adults.
Sigmund uses a mixture of story and music and video for entertaining large-group presentations that deliver an simple but key points about reading and writing skills, and that motivate students to want to put stories on paper.
Sigmund welcomes audiences of up to 400 in an assembly, and his rate is $475 plus GST for one session, $700 plus GST for two sessions, $900 plus GST for three sessions. These fees include his travel expenses of airfare and car rental and hotel and meals. Smaller schools are welcome to share the presentation and cost with another school.
(If a school has booked Sigmund for a presentation during the day, and wishes to include an evening Family Literacy presentation, Sigmund’s evening fee is reduced and the fee is donated to Operation Smile on the school’s behalf, so that a boy or girl with a cleft palate can receive a new smile.)
Each presentation includes a free ebook for every student at every age level, and a free novel in ebook format for the teachers. The librarian receives a Story Diva t-shirt as a present during the event; there is also a comprehensive package for each teacher to help get the most from the author visit, including story starters for after the visit. His rockandroll-literacy website is packed with teacher resources.
Sigmund also runs small group writing workshops to two or three classes at a time, including an inter-generational The Chapters of Our Lives workshops where students invite parents and grandparents, with the objective for students write a memoir-style story based on an interview with the parent or grandparent.
Time slots are filled on a first-come, first-serve basis, so please respond early if you are interested in booking Sigmund.

Presentations—all presentations are one hour
Rock and Roll Literacy Goes Green With Justine McKeen Based on his picture books and early chapter books like Justine McKeen, Queen of Green and the Howling Timberwolves and Sigmund’s hi-lo sports books, the presentation appeals to a k-6 audience and makes several key points: stories, like great songs, grab our emotions; writing delivers story like guitar delivers song; write story to mess with your the teacher’s emotions as long as the story and the writing is always appropriate for the audience.
The elementary school presentation has the added focus of how kids can make a environment difference in their own communities. Through Sigmund’s involvement with the Sea Women, a group of women environmental scientists, he emphasizes that there is space in science for girls.
Elementary Writing Workshop
Sigmund’s large-group assembly focuses on story as the reason to read and write, and the smaller group workshop—two or three classes of students—shows how amazing writing is as delivery system for story, giving students a new perspective on what they can accomplish by putting words on paper. The students leave with a fun story-writing assignment that the teachers can add to a classroom schedule when convenient.
Rock & Roll Literacy
Rock & Roll Literacy is a high-energy presentation for a large group of middle school students that and has earned great reviews, and hooks reluctant readers by making the key point that great stories are like great songs. He is able to focus on his involvement as one of the authors in the Seven series,on the importance of audience for students’ writing, and how their reading and writing skills are the foundation for reaching their dreams.
Middle School Writing Workshop
Sigmund's large-group assembly is about story as the reason to read and write, and in the smaller group workshop—two or three classes of students—Sigmund uses a simple pyramid system to show how students can improve their stories by improving their writing. The students leave with a fun story-writing assignment that the teachers can add to a classroom schedule when convenient.
Rock & Roll Literacy And The Chapters of Our Lives
Rock & Roll Literacy for high school students begins with the premise that each of our lives are unfolding stories that connect us. Sigmund discusses the power of story and how to use it in all endeavors as adults. He also shares the stories that had the most impact on him—the stories of his parents—his mother in Nazi-occupied Holland and his father in Japanese occupied Dutch East Indies (Indonesia) and how those stories led to the writing of Thief of Glory, a fictionalized memoir based on his father's boyhood time in a Japanese concentration camp during World War Two.
High School Writing Workshops
Based on a comprehensive study guide for Thief of Glory that was written specifically to fit high school history and language arts curriculums, Sigmund spends time with two to three classes of high school students to help them improve their writing skills.
Sigmund spends time with up to 40 students who are serious about pursuing the arts. Because of his publishing background and also because of his wife’s involvement in the music business as a Grammy-nominated singer and songwriter, Sigmund involves the students in discussion on what it takes to reach their dreams as writers or musicians.
The Chapters of Our Lives—Special Inter-generational Workshop
Combined with the large-group assembly, this workshop is based on his inspiration for Thief of Glory, a novel which Sigmund Brouwer wrote as a way to learn and honor the story of his parents, including his father’s boyhood in a Japanese concentration camp. Sigmund’s simple and foundational approach is very encouraging for those who view themselves as non-writers. Grandparents and parents are invited to join the students for the large group assembly, followed by a one-hour writing workshop with the objective for students to write one memoir chapter of the lives of their parent or grandparent. This workshop is offered at three levels: upper elementary students; middle school; high school.
Family Literacy Evening
This lively presentation is for parents to share with children, and Sigmund helps parents understand how important story is a motivator for their children to read and write. It involves music trivia where families compete as teams to earn prizes. Sigmund also uses this opportunity to emphasize how much a difference that teachers make in the lives of students, and how parents can help teachers in the educational process.
Professional Development Workshop
Based on his non-fiction title Rock & Roll Literacy, Sigmund enjoys the chance to host workshops for teachers at schools during p.d. days or at conventions. Please contact Sigmund for details at email@example.com.

None! I try to be as low maintenance as possible. When I'm in Ontario, I have a rental car and gps on the iPhone, and I show up well before the presentation to make sure my sound system is set up properly. With permission, I’ll help myself to a guest mug from the staff room for some tap water during the presentation.
None. I bring my own sound gear. (Great sound gear that will rock the gym!)
